The World Judo Championships

The Year’s Main Judo Event — the World Championships — Has Begun in Astana, the Capital of Kazakhstan!

The Georgian team’s leader in the up-to-60 kg category, Amiran Papinashvili, has already fought his bouts and lost in the third round to Kazakhstan’s Rustam Ibrayev.

The members of the Georgian team are:

• –60 kg: Amiran Papinashvili;
• –73 kg: Lasha Shavdatuashvili (August 26);
• –73 kg: Nugzar Tatalashvili (August 26);
• –81 kg: Avtandil Tchrikishvili (August 27);
• –81 kg: Ushangi Margiani (August 27);
• –90 kg: Beka Gviniashvili (August 28);
• –90 kg: Varlam Liparteliani (August 28);
• +100 kg: Levan Matiashvili (August 29);
• +100 kg: Adam Okruashvili (August 29);
• –70 kg: Esther Stam (August 28).

Fortunately, thanks to the draw, the Georgians (members of the national team) can only meet each other in medal bouts.

Ilias Iliadis (Jarji Zviadauri), competing for Greece at the World Championships, ended up in Varlam Liparteliani’s half of the draw, and if neither stumbles before then, they will meet in the semifinal.

In the up-to-66 kg category, the leader of the weight class, Giorgi Zantaraia, competes under the Ukrainian flag; Georgia has no entrant in that category.
