Five days ago I wrote that the World Judo Championships were starting. At the time I really couldn’t have imagined that I would only get to write about the first Georgian medal on the fifth day.
Spoiled as we are by our judokas, this may even seem strange to us, but judo is that kind of sport. Here even the smallest nuance affects the result, and unfortunately the first medal — a bronze at that — was decided by Georgians between themselves. As a non-specialist, I can say what has stood out these days: our team’s form. I think the peak was planned for the European Games in Baku, and holding it for a long time would of course be difficult. Our athletes evidently can’t keep top condition for two tournaments held so close together. The result matches: no European has yet won gold at these World Championships.
This first bronze was won by Varlam Liparteliani in a bout against Beka Gviniashvili. The dream has been postponed.
