After the rest day, before the stage to the legendary Mont Ventoux, at first glance nothing special was supposed to happen. True, most teams in the Tour peloton hadn’t yet shown themselves at all and would naturally try to achieve something on these transitional stages, but that would be local. A Tour stage win is highly valued among riders, but it still can’t compare with success in the overall classifications.<\/p>\n

On stage 10 a big breakaway formed whose lineup suggested a serious chance of success. Peter couldn’t let this group go; on the contrary, he was its main engine and driving spirit. Such an effort never goes unpunished. At the finish Peter could do nothing against the riders who escaped from the breakaway \u2014 especially left alone against the textbook team tactics of the Orica riders, who were there in numbers. Peter had to settle for second place, and the stage went to Michael Matthews; but Peter won back the green jersey, which was his main goal. His rivals in that classification weren’t in the breakaway, after all, so only Peter added to his points tally.<\/p>\n

The next day, the Tour’s eleventh stage, followed a different script. Strong wind is one of the main conditions for echelons, and the peloton didn’t let the breakaway go far. The two-man group was caught midway through the stage, and the sprinters’ teams took the initiative toward the finish; the situation gave the sprinters a big chance, though in a peloton that comes back together early there are always those who try to outfox the sprinters. But what happened surprised even those who have seen a lot at Grand Tours.<\/p>\n

Just over ten kilometers before the finish, on another windy section, the Tinkoff riders attacked. The team tactics were plain to see. Suddenly Maciej Bodnar broke away from the peloton and began to wind up the pace; within seconds Peter had moved onto his teammate’s wheel. As a result Peter took his second stage of this year’s Tour and seriously strengthened his position in the green jersey competition, while Froome increased his overall lead to 28 seconds.<\/p>\n
