The first De Ronde was held in Belgium&#8217;s Flanders region in 1913. This year&#8217;s route was 255 kilometers long, over which the riders had to tackle 19 climbs (hellingen), 10 of them cobbled. Traditionally the race climbed the Oude Kwaremont three times and the final Paterberg twice. The race hadn&#8217;t yet reached the decisive section when two favorites, France&#8217;s Arnaud D\u00e9mare and Belgium&#8217;s Greg Van Avermaet, were already out of the fight because of crashes. The tension peaked 32 kilometers from the finish, when Sky&#8217;s Pole Micha\u0142 Kwiatkowski, last year&#8217;s world champion, attacked and the reigning world champion responded.
