It was not a chaotic battle — it was a search carried out with telescopic precision, in which the real condition and intentions of every GC leader were laid bare.

Gall’s Fruitless Attack and Decathlon’s Ambiguous Stage

Felix Gall’s attack 13 kilometers from the finish produced no real result from the outset. The Austrian’s acceleration caused no panic at all — both Enric Mas and Primož Roglič immediately sat on his wheel.

In our view, this points to a race-management dilemma: we think Gall’s status in the team is not yet high enough for him to announce a change of plan to the sports directors over the radio based on a decision made out on the road — or perhaps he does have that freedom but makes mistakes at decisive moments. His high pace couldn’t last long, and in the end Gall unwittingly even took on the role of Enric’s “domestique de luxe” — he thinned out the group and prepared the ideal springboard for the red jersey.

However, Gall himself admitted at the finish that their main tactical goal was to drop Oscar Onley and consolidate a podium position. Overall, Decathlon CMA CGM Team looked quite solid on the stage — in the final kilometers they still had helpers left from the earlier breakaway. As a team, Decathlon even looked more convincing than Movistar today, which we certainly cannot say about the battle between the captains themselves.

Mas’s 11-Kilometer Statement: Calculation and Confidence

Enric Mas’s counterattack 11 kilometers from the finish was an illustration of a completely different class.

Vuelta a Espana 2026 – 81st Edition – 12th stage Vera – Calar Alto 166,6 km – 03/09/2026 – Enric Mas (ESP – Movistar Team) – photo Luis Angel Gomez/SprintCyclingAgency©2026

The Spaniard constantly monitors the computer on his handlebars to measure his own power and physiological capacity precisely at any given second. As soon as Gall’s pace began to drop, Mas chose the moment perfectly. This was no spontaneous move — it was a crucial psychological demonstration to his rivals that the red jersey is not defending itself, but dictating the race.

His rivals see it too. After the finish, Gall said plainly:

“Mas went at the perfect moment. He’s at the highest level, he has been showing it since the start of the race, and he’s incredibly solid. He’s also handling the red jersey brilliantly mentally.”

It’s true that Mas’s attack didn’t open a catastrophic gap to his chasers, but the 27 seconds he gained are strategically priceless. Enric himself confirmed the role of Movistar’s satellite rider (uomo ponte) and his own condition:

“I’m very happy and proud of the team; they did everything perfectly. These 27 seconds are very important for the coming week. Little by little, I’m starting to believe that I’m in the best shape of my career.”

Roglič’s “Bunker”: A Strategic Wait

If until now there were questions about Primož Roglič’s caution, today, for the first time, we can confidently state our prediction: Primož will stay entirely on the defensive until the individual time trial!

The Slovenian veteran won’t make a move anywhere. He controls the seconds, sits deep in his “bunker” and saves his energy. In our view, whether Primož fights for first place or focuses on holding his podium spot will depend precisely on the standings after the time trial. Until then, the Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe leader won’t waste a single extra watt.

Richard Carapaz: From Survival Mode to a Future Springboard

Against this background, Richard Carapaz deserves special attention. So far, the Olympic champion has been in constant “survival mode” — he isn’t shining, he is suffering, yet he is hanging on to the main battle by his teeth.

Dropped during Gall’s attack, the Ecuadorian showed character, caught up with the Roglič and Gall group in the final kilometers and crossed the line with them. This resilience leaves him a huge springboard: Carapaz has vast experience of the third week of Grand Tours, and when fatigue builds up in the others’ legs, his factor will certainly come into play.

Jakob Omrzel’s Triumph: Slovenian Genes on a Legendary Bianchi

And finally — the stage’s historic winner himself! Another Slovenian at the very top of world cycling.

The 20-year-old wunderkind of Team Bahrain Victorious, Jakob Omrzel, celebrated a phenomenal victory at the Calar Alto observatory. The winner of the 2025 Giro Next Gen proved his exceptional talent on the biggest stage. With Onley losing ground and Omrzel’s success, the revived fight for the white jersey at this year’s Vuelta takes on a completely new, dramatic dimension.

What gives this victory a special flavor is the bike on which Omrzel conquered Almería’s mountain: Bianchi! The oldest Italian brand, founded by Edoardo Bianchi in 1885, is a living mythology of cycling — from Fausto Coppi and Felice Gimondi to the era of Marco Pantani, the legendary turquoise (Celeste) has always been associated with triumph. Since 2026, through its partnership with Bahrain Victorious, Bianchi has returned to the vanguard of the WorldTour, and today the Slovenian talent took its flagship — the Bianchi Specialissima RC — to a new level of glory on Calar Alto.

Vuelta a Espana 2026 – 81st Edition – 10th stage Alcaraz – Elche de la Sierra 184,7 km – 01/09/2026 – Santiago Buitrago (COL – Bahrain Victorious) – photo Luis Angel Gomez/SprintCyclingAgency©2026

The search for the truth on Calar Alto is over.
